The Wilmington chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has been building benches for bus stops in our city that don’t have a place for bus riders to sit. We have no issue with that, but in true socialist fashion they can’t do a community project without taking the opportunity to force feed the public their rhetoric. Many of these benches are painted with socialist propaganda and are essentially socialist billboards placed throughout our city.

Citizens took notice and demanded the benches be removed.

The city is stalling on the issue while the DSA has been gathering signatures for a petition to keep the benches stating: “We’re not going to allow the City Council to prioritize the opinions of a few outspoken critics over a public good like having a bench to sit on while you wait for the bus”.
Notice the messaging here. The DSA knows they are engaging in a propaganda campaign but publicly issue a statement saying “we just want people to have a place to sit”. Yes, they do. We believe that. However, they ALSO want socialist billboards blanketing our city. This is a classic socialist technique. Tell a partial truth about a public good in an attempt to make socialism more palatable while ignoring the underlying socialist motive. “Don’t believe your eyes and ears, believe what we tell you.”
The Soviets were masters at this.

These benches are not city property. Legally, they are garbage. They are no different than an old couch discarded by the curb. The time for strongly worded letters and social media posts is over. The city isn’t acting so we will. We will not tolerate socialist billboards in our town.

That bench from the WECT channel 6 article looks very familiar. We’ve seen it somewhere else.
Oh. That’s right. We saw it in our workshop.

Always remember to sand before you paint over something.

Surely the DSA won’t mind. After all, it’s not about messaging, they are just concerned that bus riders have a nice place to sit.
Right?
It’s out there somewhere. Happy hunting DSA!
