SPLC<\/a>\u2019s Internal Hypocrisy \u2014 CNN<\/a> Investigation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Southern Poverty Law Center <\/strong><\/a>(SPLC)<\/strong> presents itself as a civil rights watchdog, but it’s neither a government agency nor a center of anything. Much like the Better Business Bureau isn’t a bureau of anything, the SPLC is also a private organization. Its funding depends on attracting donors \u2014 and keeping them engaged with the information they want them to print to maintain their income, the SPLC regularly publishes controversial hate group designations<\/a><\/strong> that align with its donors’ expectations<\/a> rather than objective standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Government Does Not Classify the Proud Boys as a Hate Group<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Despite the Southern Poverty Law Center\u2019s (SPLC) prominent labeling of the Proud Boys as a \u201chate group,\u201d no federal government agency in the United States officially agrees with that classification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018 until this day the FBI <\/strong>has never designated the Proud Boys as such. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)<\/strong> has made no formal designation of the Proud Boys as a hate group, nor has the U.S. State Department<\/strong> listed them as a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in high-profile court cases following the events of January 6, Proud Boys members were charged with crimes such as seditious conspiracy<\/strong>, not<\/strong> for participating in a group that promotes racial hatred or meets any legal definition of a hate organization. The U.S. court system held individuals accountable<\/strong>, not the group as a whole, and never legally deemed the Proud Boys a hate-based or terrorist entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This stands in sharp contrast to the SPLC\u2019s broad labeling, which carries no legal authority. In fact, SPLC’s designation is not recognized by any U.S. government body<\/strong>, making it a political opinion<\/strong>, not a formal or legal classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bottom line<\/strong>: If the Proud Boys were truly a federally recognized hate group, there would be official listings, legal bans, and wide-reaching government sanctions. There are none.<\/strong> The SPLC\u2019s label is ideological, not institutional \u2014 and it\u2019s critical that the public recognizes the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
